Holder of the first George Munro Chair in Physics at Dalhousie University, 1879–1901. A founding member of the Royal Society of Canada in 1882. Appointed the first Dean of Science at Dalhousie in 1891, he left Dalhousie in 1901 to accept the Chair of Natural Philosophy at Edinburgh University. Elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1900.
